The University of West Georgia may have broken whistleblower protection and open records laws, as well as state purchasing rules, a state investigation suggests. James Naughton thinks so too. He’s filed suit alleging his boss, Michael Ruffner, fired him for questioning the unauthorized hiring of a Washington lobbyist and misleading the school’s foundation in order to jack up fees charged to donors.

Fulton County: Whistleblowers cannot sue us

Two Fulton County employees who lost their jobs are not whistleblowers, attorneys for the county say, but even if they were, they can’t sue the county. The workers say they were caught up in a backlash against a politically sensitive probe of the misuse of county funds. Now the county contends it is immune from claims under Georgia’s whistleblower law — an argument that could undermine such suits across the state.
