Dawson County’s longtime court clerk admitted today to stealing $120,000 of court funds from 2006 through 2009. Becky McCord, 62, faces up to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to federal tax evasion and bankruptcy fraud.

The feds Wednesday arraigned a former DeKalb County police detective and her husband for allegedly passing counterfeit $100 and $50 bills at the Macy’s at Perimeter Mall. Lawana Clinton, 39, and husband Jason each face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Clinton was a detective at the time of the incident.

Feds: Ex-DeKalb deputy chief Donald Frank took bribes

Donald E. Frank, former deputy police chief for DeKalb County, was arraigned today for allegedly accepting two bribes from a small business owner. Prosecutors said Frank, 46, solicited the bribes from co-defendant Amin Budhwani, 46, in October 2008. The indictment describes each of the alleged bribes as “something of value of $5,000 or more.” Frank, who was demoted to lieutenant last year, was placed on administrative leave without pay.  UPDATE: DeKalb County announced today (May 26) that it has fired Frank.

Ponzi schemes: McDonough lawyer to prison, Hoschton broker pleads guilty

Federal prosecutors announced action in two unrelated Ponzi schemes this afternoon: Former McDonough attorney Steven H. Ballard, 53, was sent to prison for five-plus years for a scam that netted more than $1 million, and former Hoschton mortgage broker Edward William Farley, 47, pleaded guilty to fraud charges involving more than 150 victims and $20 million in losses. Ex-Polk County deputy gets 21 months in prison for beating inmate

A federal judge today sentenced a former Polk County deputy sheriff to nearly two years in prison for beating an inmate in a restraint chair. Ex-Sgt. Joshua David Lowe, 25, will serve 1 year and nine months in prison for the beating, described by a witness as unjustified and “horrible.” Read the news release …

Ex-Conyers official gets prison for embezzling $130K for waterslide, Xmas decor

Kristi Kirkus Wilson pleaded guilty in June to embezzling $130,000 that she spent on a waterslide, a barn, outdoor Christmas decorations and other home improvements. Today, a federal judge ordered Wilson, former executive director of the Conyers Housing Authority, to pay it all back and serve 18 months in prison.

A former Fulton County jailer pleaded guilty today to lying about the death of a mentally ill inmate. Derontay Anton Langford, 33, admitted lying to a federal grand jury investigating the March 2008 death of inmate Richard Glasco (left). Former detention officer Curtis Jerome Brown Jr., accused of the beating that led to Glasco’s death, and another former deputy are scheduled to go on trial next month. Langford faces a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. Look for Langford to be a witness if it goes to trial.

Iraq water bribes net 17-year sentence for Fort McPherson official

A former Fort McPherson official was sentenced to federal prison today for taking bribes to steer $66 million in contracts to provide water to U.S. troops in Iraq. Richard E. Long, 63, of St. Augustine, Fla., was convicted in February of accepting $549,700 in bribes from Mack S. Smith to help Smith’s company win the Army’s business. Long got 17 1/2 years, while Smith, also convicted in February, got 12 1/2 years. I wasn’t there, but I can pass on the news release …
