Appeals court blocks Albany hospital merger

A federal appeals court has granted a Federal Trade Commission request to temporarily halt the sale of an Albany hospital. In April, the FTC alleged that Phoebe Putney Health System’s purchase of Palmyra Medical Center would raise health care costs and that the deal had been structured to avoid anti-trust scrutiny.

Former DeKalb County parks director Becky Kelley presented “shocking evidence” of an overt pattern of racial bias by then-CEO Vernon Jones and others, a federal appellate court ruled Friday. Four current and former parks employees thus will get their day in court, or increased leverage to settle their claims out of court.
