DeKalb County schools paid $341,000 several years back for a salary audit that found they were overpaying employees by millions of dollars a year. Now, school officials can’t seem to locate those findings. So, what happened?

John F. Douglas, a three-term state senator from Social Circle, says he made $113,000 and change last year. That includes his salaries as a legislator ($31,741, including per diem) and as a field rep for the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, military retirement and his wife’s salary.

Damon Evans, UGA athletic director: $550,000

UGA President Michael Adams on Thursday defended a $90,000-a-year raise awarded to athletic director Damon Evans. With automatic annual raises and a retention bonus, Evans could earn $3.2 million under the five-year deal.

John Thompson, fired Clayton County school sup’t: $367,371

January 8, 2010 --

John Thompson, fired after just 11 months from his Clayton County post, ranked as the third-best-paid school superintendent in Georgia for 2009. Thompson pocketed about $367,000 in the fiscal year ending June 30. He lost his job in March, less than a year after he’d been hired to turn the school system around and lead it back to accreditation. Peter & Julia White, Southern Center for International Studies: $271,796

This couple’s combined salary represented 11 percent of all expenses in FY2007, as the Southern Center ran a deficit of nearly $1.2 million, tax records show. They made much more in the two previous years: $484,781 with benefits in FY2006 and $459,006 with benefits in FY2005.

Glenn Stephens, the new Gwinnett County administrator, signed a five-year contract this week worth $1.3 million. He’ll start with a base salary of $228,000 plus perks.
