Jan. 13, 2016 — Burt Jones’ 2012 Senate campaign enjoyed two distinct advantages: His good name, as special teams captain of the 2002 SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs, and that of his father, a prominent businessman who’d served eight years in the Georgia House.

The $103,500 borrowed from his father’s business also made a difference. That help, though, may not have been entirely legal.

Legislative leaders are in discussions to hire a prominent lobbying firm to help redraw district lines for the Georgia House and Senate this year. Under the proposal, Troutman Sanders Strategies would work on reapportionment maps for the Legislature and the state’s delegation to Congress. The firm recently hired former House Majority Leader Jerry Keen, and chairman Pete Robinson serves on Gov.-elect Nathan Deal’s transition team.

Eleven state legislators have filed their 2008 financial disclosures since we pointed out Monday that they had missed the July 1 deadline. Good job, guys. That’s 11 down and 26 to go. The latest filers include state Sen. Ralph Hudgens (right), now a candidate for Georgia insurance commissioner.
