Jarrell “Jay” Walker Jr., a former aide to ex-House Speaker Glenn Richardson, was among 11 people charged today in an alleged scheme by gambling interests  to buy Alabama lawmakers’ votes. Walker and others allegedly offered such inducements as illicit political contributions, campaign appearances by country music stars and payments to persuade prospective electoral opponents to withdraw — all in a failed effort to legalize electronic bingo machines in Alabama.

UPDATE: Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young acknowledged just now that he supports both Ken Hodges and Rob Teilhet to be Georgia’s next attorney general. “I plead guilty,” Young said in a phone interview. Teilhet, whose campaign received a $200 check from Young, this week accused Hodges of lying about receiving an endorsement from the former U.N. endorsement.

Congressman Sanford Bishop’s campaign spent another $30,000 on legal fees last month, presumably related to a GBI investigation of his stepdaughter’s job with a federally funded program, federal election records show. The campaign account paid Greenberg Traurig $25,000 in March, shortly after the investigation made news.
