Feds find Ga.’s insurance reviews lacking

From Georgia Health News: Georgia doesn’t meet federal requirements on consumers’ ability to get a third-party review of their appeals against an insurer’s coverage decisions. That may mean Georgia by 2012 will have to contract with an independent review organization to handle consumer complaints or with the feds to oversee the process.

Two whistleblowers are preparing to sue Fulton County Manager Zachary Williams, claiming he eliminated their jobs because they reported waste and fraud in county government. The potential plaintiffs told Williams that more than $150,000 in county funds — disguised as payments for homeless shelter supplies — had bought lavish linens, Chiavari wedding chairs and other supplies for an employee’s private event-planning business, their attorney said.

United Health Services, a Toccoa-based nursing-home chain, has shelled out $73,000 in political contributions to Georgia politicians so far this year. That was by far the largest total to surface on the first day of campaign finance reporting for 2009.
