No ‘magic shield’ protects agencies targeted by investigators

No 'magic shield' protects agencies targeted by investigators
January 5, 2012 --

Exactly three years ago today, I requested records of credit card statements for former Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill. A week or two later, after someone let it slip that the sheriff’s office had a bank account that other county officials didn’t know about, I asked for those records too.

I’m still waiting. Legally, though, there’s no valid reason that I should be.

State legislators say they welcome transparency regarding their personal finances — corporate and real estate holdings, government contracts and the like. But who decides what constitutes transparency? Who checks whether they’re telling us all that we’re entitled to know? They do. Just as war is too important to be left to the generals, transparency is too important to be left to the politicians.

An Oct. 19 hearing is scheduled for Dorothy Williams and former state Rep. George Maddox, both members of the DeKalb County Housing Authority’s board, who asked developer Dave Dixon to give to various causes. Dixon said he or his business gave them each $2,500 for a total of $5,000.

Firefighters left without knocking on door at fatal Dunwoody blaze

January 28, 2010 --

DeKalb fire officials left the scene of a fatal Dunwoody house fire Sunday without knocking on the door to check the address, investigators say in a report released today. Investigators said the address for Ann Bartlett’s home was not visible from the street. House numbers on either side were visible, which “should have provided a clue of the location of 1687 Houghton Court North.” But no one walked up Bartlett’s driveway to check.

October 21, 2009 --

The Doraville City Council has voted unanimously to oppose building a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons on the site of the former General Motors plant. DeKalb County officials are pursuing a public-private partnership to redevelop the 160-acre site, but they have not confirmed that a new home for the Falcons is in the mix. Doraville council members were not so coy.

Gwinnett impanels special grand jury to investigate land deals
September 24, 2009 --

Gwinnett County judges have created a special grand jury to investigate land purchases by county government, including parks and sites for libraries, highways and baseball. D.A. Danny Porter said he has already assembled details of 41 parkland buys since 2005, to be followed by particulars on purchases for libraries, rights of way and other property — “probably” including the $5 million purchase of 12 acres for the minor-league Gwinnett Braves’ stadium.
