High CEO pay common at Ga. hospitals

Concerns over hospital executive pay arose again recently when Reynold J. Jennings, WellStar Health System’s new CEO, received a contract with a base salary of $975,000. But that paycheck doesn’t even rank among the top 10 at non-profit hospitals in Georgia. Published reports show 14 other hospital CEOs earning seven-figure compensation.

Orange Bowl-loser Paul Johnson was only the second-highest-paid coach at Georgia Tech last year, state records show. Tech paid MaChelle Joseph, the women’s basketball coach, $8,100 more than Johnson in fiscal year 2009. Johnson collects much more overall, but state auditors show Joseph’s base salary ranked second, behind UGA’s Mark Richt, among all coaches at state universities. Wonder who else made the Top 10?

Dr. John Seffrin, CEO of the American Cancer Society since 1992, earned $1 million-plus last year thanks to a hefty deferred pay package, tax records show. The Atlanta-based non-profit, which eliminated 140 positions this year, paid Seffrin a base salary of $685,884 for the year ending Aug. 31, 2008. It also kicked in about $360,000 more toward his benefits and deferred compensation.

Lean times have forced unpaid furloughs and reduced bonuses on some educators, but they haven’t hit Beverly Hall’s pocketbook. She will earn more than $400,000 this year in salary, bonuses and other benefits, including a car.

Glenn Stephens, the new Gwinnett County administrator, signed a five-year contract this week worth $1.3 million. He’ll start with a base salary of $228,000 plus perks.
